DAKOTA THERAPY'S FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CLICK ON QUESTIONS TO OPEN AND CLOSE
Do I need counseling services?

If you choose to come in we will complete an assessment during your initial visit. If I can help you I will tell you why and how we will proceed. Otherwise we will discuss what you can do from that point on, to get what you need, for example I might refer you to someone else.

How long will treatment last?

Typically it will take three sessions to get a complete picture of your needs, and what you want to achieve.

After that you might decide that you have the tools you need to work things out on your own, or we can plan for additional services.

How will I know when to stop therapy?

When you feel the issues that brought you into therapy no longer affect you in a negative manner.

However, you might decide to continue to address other issues in your life and that is a decision we would make at the appropriate time.

What will it cost?

Unfortunately therapy is somewhat expensive.

Fortunately I take many types of insurance, and I am committed to helping those who are uninsured or underinsured by providing a sliding fee scale.

I will do everything within reason to accommodate you if you are without insurance, or if I am out of network.

How soon can I start?

I will typically be able to schedule an initial intake appointment within 48-72 hours. I have day, evening, and weekend hours to accommodate you.

For those with transportation and/or physical challenges, I will consider home visits within reason. This would require a minimal additional fee for travel time.

Will anyone know that I am in therapy?

Client confidentiality is not only a federal law, but I see our relationship as a sacred trust. Only after you sign a Release of Information would I share any information with anybody for any reason. Rare exceptions exist in any confidential relationship and these will be explained in detail when you come in.

Why do people seek therapy?

People come into counseling for many reasons; some people have unexpected changes in their lives that they might have difficulty adjusting to, while others seek self-exploration and personal growth. When a person is overwhelmed by guilt, doubt, anxiety, or despair, therapy can help.

Counseling can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping for anybody who is willing to be honest and open to change. People seeking counseling are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards self-change and create greater awareness in their lives. With time and effort, that powerful potential for change that you have within you will result in positive change in your life.

Do you have areas of special expertise?

In my 20 years of experience I have helped people with a very wide variety of challenges. During this time I have specialized in the areas of chemical health, gambling emotional challenges, depression, anger, anxiety, and adjustment issues in adults, and adolescents.

I also have significant experience and expertise in relational challenges, between adults, and between adults and adolescents. If you are interested in what is called Life Coaching, to find more meaning and purpose in your life, I can help with that as well. Again, if you can be better served by another counselor/therapist I will not hesitate to refer you.
